[0004] It has been found that different zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (ZDDPs) exhibit different volatilities and have different effects on automotive emission control catalysts. In other words, the ZDDP will break down as a result of normal wear and use in the engine crankcase. Therefore different ZDDP molecules will break down into different fragment molecules. The decomposition fragments may have substantially different levels of volatility. If the zinc dialkyldithiophosphates and their corresponding decomposition fragments have low volatility, they will accordingly have less adverse effects on the combustion emission control system, since only few phosphorus atoms pass through the combustion system and to the emission control system.
