Abstract

Disclosed is an alkaline dry cell comprising a positive electrode (3) containing a positive electrode active material, a negative electrode (6) containing a negative electrode active material, a separator (4), and an alkaline electrolyte solution. The negative electrode active material contains a zinc alloy powder containing calcium and bismuth. The zinc alloy powder contains not less than 10% by weight but not more than 60% by weight of calcium relative to bismuth, while containing not less than 0.004% by weight but not more than 0.02% by weight of bismuth. The zinc alloy powder contains particles having a particle diameter of not more than 75 [mu]m in an amount of not less than 11% by weight. Consequently, the alkaline dry cell is sufficiently improved in high power pulse discharge performance without having harmful effects such as rapid temperature rise at the time of short circuit of the cell or occurrence of liquid leakage.
