Embodiment Construction

[0019] The present invention includes an image acquisition system that includes an improved image sensor having a plurality of pixels and a plurality of cylindrical microlenses that focus light onto underlying pixels to preferably on one side or the other so that a stereoscopic image can be generated from the captured pixel data using techniques known in the art. One advantage of the present invention is that the improved image sensor can be used with a variety of imaging lenses to enable the capture of stereoscopic or other multi-view images.

[0020] figure 1 A schematic cross-sectional view of a single cylindrical microlens 110 positioned over a subset of pixels 120 , 121 in an image sensor 124 is shown. The cylindrical microlens includes a first portion on the left side of the cylindrical microlens and a second portion on the right side of the cylindrical microlens. Imaging lens 130 focuses incident radiation (shown as light rays 126 and 128 ) onto microlens 110 . Micro...

Abstract

The invention discloses an image acquisition system with a modified image sensor that enables simultaneous capture of at least two images with different perspectives. The pixels are split into two or more subsets of pixels under a series of cylindrical microlenses or linear light guides. The cylindrical microlenses or linear light guides limit the radiation to impinge upon first and second subsets of pixels under each microlens or light guide to come from only one half or the other half of the imaging lens so that stereo image sets are produced.

Description

technical field [0001] The invention relates to an image sensor that captures radiation from a scene. The present invention also relates to an image sensor with a cylindrical microlens capable of simultaneously capturing multiple images with different viewing angles. Background technique [0002] It is known in the art that a stereoscopic image consisting of two or more images captured from two or more cameras separated by a distance from each other provides different perspectives. However, these multi-camera systems are bulky and difficult to align or calibrate due to the large size of such systems. Stereo cameras with two or more lenses are also known in the art. U.S. Patent Application 11 / 684,036 filed March 9, 2007 by John N. Border et al. in the name of Eastman Kodak Company discloses the use of a camera with two or more The difference of different viewing angles in more than two images produces a rangemap. [0003] In US Patent 6,545,741 to Meltzer, a stereo camera...
