Abstract

The invention provides a foreground image separation method. By the method, dynamic foreground and static background can be separated in continuous input images with automatic white balance or abrupt luminance change. The method comprises the following steps of: receiving an input image from a camera; performing white balance or luminance compensation on the input image according to a reference image to generate a compensation image, which has a background color and background luminance which are roughly the same as that of the reference image; and performing a background subtraction algorithm on the compensation image to generate a background separation result. The background subtraction algorithm can be a Gaussian MixtureModel-based algorithm. In the method, the images continuously input by the camera are treated, so that foreground image separation results are continuously generated and the reference image is updated according to the foreground image separation results to ensure that a monitoring system can adapt to the change of the lighting condition.
