Embodiment Construction

[0044] The methods of the invention involve considerations in seed selection, including seed origin (origin, density and size). It further addresses seed treatment considerations including stratification treatments, timing of germination to extend the growing season, sowing technique (depth). It further involves air pruning, preferably in two steps using air as a means of pruning to enhance the development of dense fibrous root mass. It further relates to grading for stock uniformity and to reduce transplant losses. Finally, the method involves the choice of growth medium, including fertilizers, air gap considerations, wetting agents, and components. The methods of the invention increase growth rate and induce early flowering and fruiting.

[0045]Seed selection is an important component in accelerating tree growth. Special care should be taken to ensure that seeds are selected from superior individual parents, displaying prominent phenotypes typical for a particular specie...

Abstract

The invention relates to a method of developing tree seedlings, including germinating the seeds on a growing medium and air pruning the roots of the seedlings.

Description

field of invention [0001] The present invention relates to improved methods for accelerating tree growth and development through enhanced root development. Background of the invention [0002] While there is a growing demand for natural hardwoods, commercial farming of these trees has been hampered by their slow growth and difficulty in transplanting them. Similarly, non-commercial reforestation of hardwoods suffers from slow growth and difficulty in transplantation. "Traditional" production methods for natural hardwoods such as oak, hickory, ash, nut trees, etc. are recognized to be slow growing and tend to develop a rough, carrot-like dominant tap root system which makes these trees difficult to grow in the nursery. Transplantation in medium and especially out-planting cases often has a mortality rate of 70% or more. [0003] In an attempt to try and solve the problems associated with the portability of native hardwoods and other difficulties in transplanting the species...
