The invention relates to a system and a method for remotely controlling tunnel indicator boards. The system comprises a control main station, a plurality of control substations and a plurality of groups of indicator boards corresponding to the control substations; the control main station is a control center; a communication mode RS485 is adopted between the control main station and each control substation; each control substation controls a corresponding group of indicator boards; the control main station comprises a four-way switch, a four-channel relay and a four-digit toggle switch; the four-way switch is used for respectively and correspondingly controlling a normal running indicator light, a left running indicator light, a right running indicator light and a fault indicator light through the four-channel relay and is connected with a switching push button of a controller panel; a toggle switch is used for selecting control capacity of the control main station; each control substation comprises an eight-channel relay and a version returning indicator light of the eight-channel relay; and the eight-channel relays are used for respectively and correspondingly controlling right-lane indicator boards and left-lane indicator boards.
