Problems solved by technology

Different speed limits, detours, stop signs, traffic lights, altitudes, traffic patterns, etc. add to this complexity
If all this information is updated at this level of detail, the bandwidth requirements for efficient transmission can be very large
[0010] Also, if tens of millions of users are trying to update the data at the same time, this can further overload the server by over-serving the data

Embodiment Construction

[0035] figure 1 An example block topology of a vehicle 31 based computer system 1 (VCS) is illustrated. An example of such an on-board computer system 1 is the SYNC system of the Ford Motor Company. A vehicle capable of using a vehicle-based computing system may contain a virtual front-end interface 4 located in the vehicle. The user can also interact with the interface (if present) through, for example, a touch screen. In another illustrative embodiment, the interaction occurs through key presses, spoken dialogue, and speech synthesis.

[0036] exist figure 1 In the illustrative embodiment shown in 1, a processor 3 controls at least a portion of the operation of the vehicle-based computing system. A processor provided in a vehicle allows instructions and programs to be processed in the vehicle. Furthermore, the processor is connected to non-persistent memory 5 and persistent memory 7 . In this illustrative embodiment, the non-persistent storage is random access memory (...

Abstract

The illustrative embodiments include update determination programmed logic circuitry operable to determine that a map data tile stored in a vehicle database is in need of updating. The illustrative embodiments further include update qualification programmed logic circuitry operable to qualify the permissibility of an update. Also included in the illustrative embodiments is update provision programmed logic circuitry operable to, contingent on the qualifying, provide an updated version of the map data tile. The update determination, update qualification and update provision programmed logic circuitry are operable to repeat the determining, qualifying and providing for at least all tiles included in a route within a predetermined proximity of a vehicle's current location along the route.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to systems, methods and apparatus for improved map information transmission and processing. Background technique [0002] Navigation systems are ubiquitous in many vehicles and on many mobile devices including, but not limited to, cell phones, smart phones, hand-held computers (PDAs), and the like. These systems typically use Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates to determine the user's current location, and may also have a destination entered into them. [0003] Typically (though not necessarily) the destination is entered in the form of an address, location name, or intersection. While the original GPS system was used by hikers and outdoorsmen, modern GPS is commonly used to navigate from one location to a predetermined address or predetermined point, usually corresponding to a map location. [0004] Therefore, most modern GPS systems incorporate the use of some form of map data when planning directions...
