[0015] figure 1 A gearless traction elevator system 10 with a double coiled traction rope system 11 is illustrated. The first pulley 13 is driven by a lift motor 15 and the second pulley 17 is driven by a lift motor 19 . A power source 21 , such as an electrical utility, provides electrical power to the drive unit 23 via a power line 22 . Alternating current (AC) drive power at variable frequency is supplied to the motors 15 and 19 by a motor drive unit 23 via power lines 24 . Lift motors 15 and 19 are permanent magnet AC motors that change speed as the drive frequency varies. The motor drive unit 23 is controlled by a controller 25 and control signals transmitted via line 26 . The motor drive unit 23 may include a converter for converting AC input power to a DC voltage on the DC bus, and an inverter (or inverters) for converting the DC voltage from the DC bus to AC drive power, The AC drive power has a frequency determined by a control signal from the controller 25 .
