Problems solved by technology

Hierarchical storage systems exist because high-speed storage devices such as SSDs and FC / SCSI (Fibre Channel / Small Computer System Interface) disk drives are more compact than SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) disk drives, optical drives, and tape drives. Slow devices are more expensive (per byte stored)

Embodiment Construction

[0039] figure 2 The overall architecture of an example of a data storage system implementing the present invention is shown. System 10 is a hierarchical storage system with figure 1 System 1 has a generally similar storage structure, with SSD 11 and alternative storage provided by HDD array 12 and tape drive module 13 . SSD 11 has an array of flash memory die 14 and a flash controller 15 . HDD array 12 includes a plurality of hard disk drives. In addition to the usual internal control functions in individual HDDs, HDD arrays may optionally include an array controller 16, as shown in dashed lines. Such an array controller may perform array-level control functions, such as RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Devices) management, in array 12 in a known manner. Interconnect 17 provides a data link between hierarchical storage modules 11-13.

[0040] Unlike existing architectures, all data read / write requests from hosts using the system 10 are provided directly to the SSD 11...

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for managing data in a data storage system (10) having a solid-state storage device (11) and alternative storage (12, 13). In an internal management process, such as garbage collection or wear-levelling, performed in the solid- state storage device (11), data is identified which needs to be moved in the device (11) for internal management of the solid-state storage (14). At least some of the data so identified is moved to the alternative storage (12, 13) instead of the solid-state storage (14). Metadata, indicating the location of data in the solid-state storage device (11) and the alternative storage, (12, 13) is maintained to track data movements.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to data management in solid state storage devices and hierarchical data storage systems. Methods and devices for managing data in a tiered data storage system including solid state storage devices are provided. Solid state memory devices and data storage systems employing such methods are also provided. Background technique [0002] Solid state storage is non-volatile memory that employs electronic circuitry, usually in an electrical circuit (IC), for storing data, rather than traditional magnetic or optical media like disks and tapes. Solid-state storage devices (SSDs), especially flash storage devices, are currently fundamentally changing the data storage landscape. This is because they offer expected bandwidth and random I / O (input / output) performance orders of magnitude higher than hard disk drives (HDDs). Additionally, with no moving parts, SSDs offer significant power savings and are more durable than tr...
