[0013] overview

[0014] A computing device may take the form of many different devices, such as peripheral devices, virtual devices (eg, "print-to" devices implemented in software), and so on. However, conventional techniques employed to collect telemetry data about a computing device do not identify devices connected to and / or implemented by the computing device. This can make it difficult to process telemetry data, which is performed for various purposes such as compatibility analysis to calculate metrics, test prioritization, client messaging, and the like.

[0015] Techniques for device identification using device capabilities are described. In one or more implementations, a device is identified based on which device capabilities are identifiable for use by the computing device. Flash memory may be identified by computing devices as USB mass storage devices, portable devices, and disk drives, for example. One or more of these functions may have a unique identifier to...

Abstract

Device identification techniques using identifiable device functions are described. In one or more implementations, data is obtained that describes functions of a device that are identifiable for use in conjunction with a computing device and a device identifier (ID) is computed for the peripheral device based on the identifiable device functions.

Description

Background technique [0001] The variety of devices employed by computing devices is growing day by day. For example, a computing device may employ devices configured as storage, printing, scanning, wireless communication, voice input, image capture, etc. to add a number of different functions to the computing device. [0002] However, conventional techniques for collecting telemetry data about a computing device typically do not identify the device associated with the computing device. Accordingly, it may be difficult to determine "how" and "where" the functionality of a computing device is implemented. This further complicates the processing of telemetry data, such as compatibility analysis to determine issues that may occur between the computing device and devices connected thereto. Contents of the invention [0003] Device identification techniques using device capabilities are described. In one or more implementations, data describing functionality of a device that is...
