[0157] In this section the application of this technique to an exemplary synthetic reservoir model is described. Although the reservoir model discussed here is synthetic, it has geological properties that characterize fluid flow in deepwater depositional environments.

[0158] Figure 6 is a diagram of a simulation model 600 of a reservoir showing the flow composition of a deepwater system. The simulation model has two geological units, Unit0 602 and Unit1 604 , each of which has two depositional environments (EODs): channel axis (EOD1 ) 606 and channel edge (EOD0 ) 608 . Channel axis 606 includes high-quality reservoir rocks that may contain the highest concentrations of hydrocarbons that can be found. Further, two structural or stratigraphic faults 610 pass through both cells 602 and 604 . Such as Figure 6 The simulation model used in this example, shown in , has an injection well 612 for injection of water or other fluids to aid production, and a production well 614 fo...

Abstract

A method for matching a production history to a flow simulation includes identifying a plurality of parameters that control an objective function that measures a mismatch between a flow simulation response and a production history in a parameter subspace. For each of the multiple experiments in the parameter subspace, values for the objective function and for the static measurements are computed. These results are used to develop a mathematical relationship between one or more static measurements and an objective function. In subsequent simulation model conditioning, an objective window in the objective function is identified, and a flow simulation is performed for each modified model that is predicted from static geological measurements, resulting in an objective function within that window. The objective function is calculated for each flow simulation to the production history, and the process is repeated until the objective function is within the target range.
