Embodiment Construction

[0034] Techniques for managing input to wireless communication devices via contactless gesture recognition are described herein. Contactless gesture recognition systems utilize infrared (IR) light emitters and IR proximity sensors to detect and recognize gestures. The system recognizes, extracts, and classifies 3D gestures in substantially real-time, which enables intuitive interactions between users and mobile devices. Using this system as a gesture interface, users can perform actions such as turning pages of e-books, scrolling web pages, zooming in and out, playing games, etc. on mobile devices using intuitive gestures without touching, wearing or holding any other device. Additionally, the techniques described in this application reduce the frequency with which a user touches a mobile device, thereby reducing wear and tear on the surface of the device. In addition, this application describes techniques for controlling IR emissions based on ambient light conditions, execut...

Abstract

Systems and methods are described for performing contactless gesture recognition for a computing device, such as a mobile computing device. An example technique for managing a gesture-based input mechanism for a computing device described herein includes identifying parameters of the computing device relating to accuracy of gesture classification performed by the gesture-based input mechanism and managing a power consumption level of at least an infrared (IR) light emitting diode (LED) or an IR proximity sensor of the gesture-based input mechanism based on the parameters of the computing device.
