Problems solved by technology

This significantly increases the complexity of the casing running, seating and setting operations, as additional tubing must be run with the field string through the platform opening without being tied up in the field string running equipment, or potentially become pinched by in-place string running equipment, thereby impeding the operation of the running tool as it reaches the subsea location
Additionally, hydraulic pressure is applied by applying pressure to the hydraulic lines at the surface, and there may be a delay of several minutes before this pressure is sensed at the running tool
this is unacceptable delay

Abstract

The invention relates to a method and system for performing an electrically operated function with a running tool in a subsea wellhead. A subsea running tool (17, 35, 53) receives electric potential from a control unit (25, 43, 61) located at a platform (21, 39, 57) through a tubular string (19, 37, 55, 67) having an electrically conductive wire (79) formed in tubular wall of the tubular string (19, 37, 55, 67). The running tool (17, 35, 53) provides at least one electrically operated function for setting a subsea wellhead component (18, 32, 54). The running tool (17, 35, 53) is then run on the tubular string (19, 37, 55, 67) from a surface platform (21, 39, 57) to a location within a wellhead (13, 31, 49). Electric potential is then supplied to the electrically conductive wire (79) by a control unit (25, 43, 61) at the platform (21, 39, 57) to operate the electrically operated function of the running tool (17, 35, 53) to set the subsea wellhead component (18, 32, 53).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to communication with downhole equipment, and in particular to methods and systems for performing electrically operated functions with a running tool in a subsea wellhead. Background technique [0002] In both subsea and land-based oil and gas production operations, operators drill and produce wells at greater and greater depths. Consequently, the total weight of material placed in the well is constantly increasing. In addition, the casing loads located right in the well are constantly increasing. Because of these loads, many operators now use dedicated landing strings to run and seat the casing in the wellhead. This is done to ensure that the set string can support the weight of the casing string in the wellhead while it is in place and the casing hanger is set. These in-place tubing strings may be special tubing strings specially designed to support this weight and have increased pipe wall thickness to provi...
