[0021] The present inventors conceived and simplified the implementation of a sulfate removal water treatment process with substantially complete process recovery. Process recovery is defined as the ratio of membrane filtration permeate flow to raw water feed flow plus any recirculated water flow. Raw water feedwater is the portion of influent water that enters the process from the water source to be treated. The total body of water flowing into the water treatment process consists of raw water feedwater and recirculated water as will be described. In the described process, substantially all of the concentrated water and the water used to backwash the multimedia filter unit or other pretreatment filters after passing through the sulfate removal process is recycled and returned to the overall process influent.
