Abstract

A permanent magnet electric machine is provided with a rotor positioned at least partially within a stator. The rotor includes first and second ring segments axially oriented about a central axis. The rotor defines first and second configurations in first and second ring segments, respectively. The first configuration is sufficiently different from the second configuration that torque ripple can be minimized. A first layer of slots, defining slot outer edges, may be formed in the rotor. In one embodiment, the stator-slot gap varies between the first and second ring segments. In another embodiment, the stator-rotor gap varies between the first and second ring segments. In another embodiment, the bridge thickness varies between the first and second ring segments. The rotor therefore appears axially asymmetric.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to electric machines, and more particularly to the construction of interior permanent magnet electric machines. Background technique [0002] An interior permanent magnet electric machine generally includes a rotor having a plurality of magnets of alternating polarity around the outer periphery of the rotor. The rotor is selectable within the stator, which generally consists of multiple windings and poles with alternating magnetism. Permanent magnet motors can produce undesired torque fluctuations, resulting in undesired vibration and noise. Typically, the configuration of the rotor in an interior permanent magnet motor is axially symmetric. Contents of the invention [0003] A permanent magnet electric machine is provided with a rotor positioned at least partially within a stator. The rotor includes first and second ring segments axially oriented about a central axis. The rotor defines a first configuratio...
