Embodiment Construction

[0026] An invention is disclosed for protecting data integrity of cached storage devices using a globally unique identifier (GUID) partition table in an alternate OS environment. In general, embodiments of the present invention use a disk's GUID partition table to provide a mechanism for protecting the data integrity of a cached disk. Since the OS attempts to access the disk via the GUID Partition Table, this process provides for controlling what the user sees on the disk when in an alternate OS environment without requiring additional hardware or physically changing the system architecture Mechanisms.

[0027] In the following description, numerous specific details are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of the present invention. It will be apparent, however, to one skilled in the art, that the present invention may be practiced without some or all of these specific details. In other instances, well known process steps have not been described in detail in...

Abstract

Inventions are provided for protecting data integrity of cached storage devices in an alternate operating system (OS) environment. The invention includes replacing the globally unique identifier partition table (GPT) for the cached disk with a modified globally unique identifier partition table (MGPT). When MGPT is used by the OS to access cached partitions, MGPT makes cached partitions on cached disks inaccessible, while non-cached partitions on cached disks remain accessible when MGPT is used . In normal operation, data on the cached disk is accessed using information based on the GPT that can usually be stored on the cache disk via caching software. In response to receiving a request to disable caching, the GPT is used to replace the MGPT on the cached disk, thus allowing all data on the normally cached disk to be Accessible.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 595,986, entitled "Method for Protecting Data Integrity of a Storage Device in an External Operating Environment," filed August 27, 2012, which is incorporated by reference here. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to data integrity, and more particularly to protecting the data integrity of GUID partition table based storage devices in an alternative operating system environment. Background technique [0004] Caches have long been used in storage environments to enhance the performance of slower storage devices such as disk drives. In a cache, smaller and faster storage media are used for temporary storage and retrieval of frequently used data, while larger and often slower mass storage media are used for long-term storage of data. One caching method is write-back caching, in which data written to disk is ...
