Embodiment 1

[0078] The supernatant of Streptomyces acid scabica effectively controls or reduces the following green algae at dilutions as low as 100-fold: Oedogonium foveolatum, Spirogyra spp, Volvox aureus, Volvox globator, Closterium sp., Chlamydomonas sp.

[0079] Streptomyces acid scab was cultured in Oat Meal Broth liquid medium for 5 days at room temperature. The cell cultures were centrifuged and the supernatant collected, filtered through a 0.45 micron filter, and saved for bioactivity assays. The supernatant was evaluated against the above mentioned algae at different dilutions. The algae were obtained from Carolina Biological Supply Company and were cultured and maintained following the provided manual. Alga-Cro freshwater medium from Carolina Biosupply was used to grow algae. The activity of supernatants against algae was measured using maximum inhibitory dilution (MDI). The assay was performed for 3 weeks. Algal growth was visually inhibited by the diluted supernatant. S...

Embodiment 2

[0083] The supernatant of Streptomyces acid scabies was demonstrated to be toxic to blue-green algae: Blue-green algae (Ocitella sp.) were obtained from Carolina Biosupply and grown in the recommended medium (Alga-Cro freshwater medium) nourish. The supernatant of S. acidicus scab was added to the algal cultures at various dilutions. The treated algal cultures were incubated at room temperature under normal room light. After three weeks, algae growth was assessed in terms of growth inhibition. The results showed a maximum inhibitory dilution of greater than 50-fold for the growth of this blue-green algae.

Embodiment 3

[0085] Supernatants of Streptomyces acid scabies proved to be toxic to red algae: Batrachospermum sp., Callithamnion sp., and Rhodymenia sp. Obtained from Carolina Biosupply. Algae were cultured and maintained following the provided manual. The experimental protocol used to perform the bioassay was the same as above. It can be confirmed from the table below that some red algae, such as the species of Monococcus and Dulse are also quite sensitive to thaxtomin supernatant.

Abstract

Methods of treating and / or controlling algae including contacting algae with an effective amount of one or more thaxtomins are disclosed. One or more thaxtomins are applied to algae contaminated environments in a predetermined amount effective in controlling, reducing and / or killing algae.

Description

[0001] The application of the present invention is based on the application date of April 7, 2008, the application number is 200880019490.2 (the international application number is PCT / US2008 / 059550), and the name is "the method of controlling algae using Thaxtomin and Thaxtomin composition". Divisional application. [0002] Cross References to Related Applications [0003] This application claims priority and the benefit of Provisional Application No. 60 / 910,723, filed April 9, 2007, which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety, under 35 USC § 119. technical field [0004] The present disclosure relates to the treatment of algae with one or more thaxtomins. The method can be used to apply to water requiring treatment to control, minimize and / or eliminate algae, such as raw sewage, or surfaces or equipment contaminated with algae. Background technique [0005] Many pools, ponds, lakes, tanks, estuaries, and oceans contain large suspended algae populations in t...
