Apparatus and Process for Biological Wastewater Treatment

A self-sustaining wastewater treatment facility abates greenhouse gas abatement, captures CO2 and produces biomass to address multiple critical environmental needs. The facility includes an array of rotating media wheels that create an optimum ordered mixing of algae for sustained growth. Biomass harvested from the rotating media wheels may be provided to other processing facilities to produce, for instance, bio-fuels. Waste CO2 from the processing facility may also be returned to the treatment system for enhanced algae growth. Bacteria are provided to form a symbiotic relationship with the algae, fueled by sunlight to effectively remove toxic materials from the wastewater. The multi-functional facility may also be integrated into a regenerative facility in which the biomass obtained from the algal and bacterial colonies is used in a separate facility and byproducts of the operation of the separate facility are used by the multi-functional facility to fuel further algal growth.

Solar distillation unit

A solar distilling apparatus employs anthracite coal as a heat-absorbing medium. Greenhouse roof elements rest over a gutter that is isolated from the water-holding container to prevent deposit formation and algae growth from reaching the gutter. Bacterial growth is inhibited by ventilation and the use of titanium-laden magnetite mixed with the anthracite particles. The gutter is also isolated from the exterior of the unit, which prevents contamination from outside sources. The exterior side of the roof elements resting on the gutter are fitted with a metal skirt that provides a heat sink preventing the re-evaporation of condensation flowing toward the gutter.

A swimming pool cover which retards algae growth. Two films are sealed together so as to create air pockets which allow the pool cover to float on the surface of the water. One or both of the films contains a material which prevents the passage of light in those wavelengths which are necessary for algae growth, especially 350-500 nm and 600-700 nm. The material may either be a dye which has a color associated with that wavelength or may be a transparent material which removes those wavelengths of light. The remaining wavelengths of light are allowed to pass through the cover in order to heat the water but not cause algae growth. Additionally, the cover can be made by mixing light absorbing material into the plastic before making the film for the pool cover or may be made by applying a layer of light absorbing material to the film.
