The present invention is a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a binder and a salt of the following fluoroalkyl phosphonic acid: wherein n, q, and p are as described herein. The composition of the present invention is useful as a block additive in coating compositions.

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates to a composition comprising a fluoroalkyl phosphonate and a binder. [0002] Block resistance is the ability of a paint not to stick to itself. For example, good blocking resistance enables a door not to stick to a door frame or a window not to stick to its frame. Antiblocking properties in waterborne paint formulations are achieved by antiblocking additives such as fluorinated alkyl surfactants containing high concentrations of fluorine. These highly fluorinated compounds in architectural coating compositions generally perform better than compounds containing lower fluorine content. Unfortunately, these better performing surfactants are much more expensive to manufacture and tend to be environmentally unfriendly.
