Problems solved by technology

[0018] Many developing countries deploying IMS architectures rely exclusively on online charging architectures, mainly because the technical infrastructure used to build online charging systems for IMS architectures is not as complex and expensive as that required to build offline charging systems

Embodiment Construction

[0036] In an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network of a wireless network operator domain, subscriber data for IMS subscribers is provisioned in a Home Subscriber Server (HSS). Specifically, for each subscriber, the provisioned data includes a "pointer" or identification to a billing address profile maintained in the HSS. The Charging Address Profile will include one or both of the following: an Event Charging Function (ECF) parameter that is the address of the relevant OCS in the operator domain; and the CDF address (e.g. FQDN) of the relevant CDF in the operator domain (possibly an ECF primary and secondary addresses of both CDF and CDF). Typically, postpaid subscribers are associated with offline charging and prepaid subscribers are associated with online charging, but online charging can also be used for postpaid subscribers eg to enable cost control.

[0037] For operators that only have a charging system that supports online charging (i.e., where the network infrastructu...

Abstract

Apparatus for use within an IP Multimedia Subsystem network and comprising a receiver for receiving for a given user a charging type defining whether the user is a pre-paid user and or a post-paid user. The apparatus further comprises a Charging Triggering Function, CTF, entity for sending accounting information messages relating to said user to an Online Charging Function over an Ro interface or to a Charging Data Function over an Rf interface, and for including with the accounting information messages said charging type.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to charging decisions in the IP Multimedia Subsystem and, in particular, to those decisions made on how a subscriber is charged for using IP Multimedia Subsystem services. Background technique [0002] IP Multimedia (IPMM) services provide a combination of voice, video, messaging, data, etc. in the same session. As the number of basic applications and the media they can be combined increases, the number of services offered to end users will increase and the possibilities for enriching the experience of human-to-human communication will increase. This has led to the creation of new personalized, rich multimedia communication services, including so-called "combined IP multimedia" services. [0003] IMS is a technology defined by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) for providing IP multimedia services over a mobile communication network. IMS provides features for enhancing the end-user human-to-human communicati...
