Abstract

A handle section for an oral health detection device that is capable of use with both diagnostic and non-diagnostic cleaning sections is disclosed. The handle section includes a motor and a drive shaft having a longitudinal axis; a coupling section at an end of the handle section for coupling a cleaning section thereto; a light source for emitting excitation radiation having a wavelength greater than about 580 nm; an assembly for directing the excitation radiation to the dental region of the mouth; a light sensor for receiving fluorescence radiation having a wavelength greater than about 850 nm reflected from dental deposits; a logic component operable to analyze the fluorescence radiation received by the light sensor; and a controller including a light source activating device that is activated when a diagnostic cleaning section including a coding device is coupled to the coupling section.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to an oral health monitoring device, and more particularly, to an oral health monitoring device that employs excitation radiation to detect dental deposits such as plaque, caries, bacterial infection, and tartar on teeth during a normal brushing regimen . Background technique [0002] The current approach is that consumers get the information they need about their oral hygiene during dental visits. Consumers lack tools that independently provide the ability to assess and control their brushing habits and receive information about their oral health at home. Self-diagnosis at home has significant limitations, including low visual accessibility of teeth and mouth and no ability to understand the signs of most oral care problems early on, before they become serious. Dental regions known to have dental deposits respond to light emitting fluorescent radiation that differs in intensity and spectral distribution from ...
