The electric motor is of the type having a set of coils as part of a stator for attachment to a vehicle and radially surrounded by a rotor for attachment to a wheel, which rotor houses a set of magnets. Abstract

An electric motor or generator system comprises a stator 100, a rotor 110, a first bearing (270 see fig 2), a first coupling device 140 such as a tie rod and a second coupling device comprising two elements (300, 310 see fig 2). The second coupling device includes a first coupling element (310) coupled to a vehicle and a second coupling element (300) coupled to the rotor 110. A second bearing (320, 330 see fig 2) is mounted between the first coupling element (310) and the second coupling element (300) to allow the rotor 110 to rotate relative to the vehicle. The first bearing (270) is mounted between surfaces of the stator 100 and the rotor 110 or the second coupling element (300) to allow the rotor 110 to rotate relative to the stator 100. The first coupling device 140 is arranged to substantially prevent movement of the stator 100 relative to the first coupling element (310) in a first degree of freedom while allowing movement of the stator 100 relative to the first coupling element (310) in at least a second degree of freedom. The system improves an in-wheel motor arrangement with respect to rigidity and suspension without being excessively heavy.
