Problems solved by technology

First, there is a lack of public awareness of the disease and its symptoms
Second, all routine therapeutic interventions require hospitalization of the patient
Thus, and again, even with this device, on-site treatment of stroke patients remains lacking

Embodiment Construction

[0017] Various embodiments disclosed herein are directed to methods and devices for treating patients at risk of acute ischemic stroke in the field and / or during transport to a nursing facility. According to one embodiment, this treatment may be achieved by non-invasively applying ultrasound waves through the intact skull / cranium to trigger various biophysical effects. According to another embodiment, this non-invasive application of ultrasound can be performed via the intact skull / head in combination with intravenous injection of microbubbles to trigger various biophysical effects. Among other effects, the aforementioned biophysical effects that are triggered by utilization according to various embodiments may include, but are not limited to, the following: a) improvement of collateral and interstitial flow; b) affected vascular supply Restoration of arterial flow in the region; c) reduction of associated edema; d) activation of chaperones; e) stimulation of latent progenitor...

Abstract

Methods and apparatuses are provided for initiating stroke treatment “in the field” and / or during the transport of the patient to a care facility. The capability is provided to adjust automatically to the individual “therapeutic window” for each single patient, which is crucial because of the significant differences in skull morphology between humans of different age, gender and race. Further, the methods and apparatuses are based on the use of non-invasive application of ultrasound, as well as the non-invasive application of ultrasound in combination with an acoustically active agent, such as microbubbles, where stable cavitation of the microbubbles caused by the ultrasound may be relied upon as an underlying mechanism for both the therapeutic application as well as its control.

Description

[0001] This invention was made with Government support under Grant HL091043 from the National Institute of Health. The Government has certain rights in this invention. technical field [0002] The present invention relates to the treatment of patients with stroke or stroke-like conditions, and more particularly to such a portable device by the transcranial application of ultrasound waves as such non-invasively and in combination with intravenously administered microbubbles, to provide "on-site" and / or initiate therapy and monitor patients during transport to a nursing facility. Background technique [0003] Stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) is the rapid loss of brain function due to a disturbance in the blood supply to the brain, for example due to a lack of blood flow (called ischemia) caused by an obstruction or massive hemorrhage, such as Blood clots, or arterial embolisms. Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide and the third leading cause of death...
