The idea of local dimming is based on the fact that i) one image may contain a large number of dark parts; ii) the LED devices of the backlight unit can be individually controlled. If the LEDs are controlled in such a way that, for example, the backlight is dark after dark parts of the image and bright after bright parts of the image, this means that the brightness of each LED can be different, and can depend on the content of the image. The desired brightness of a pixel (which is given by the image data) is achieved by the backlight brightness generated by the LEDs and the transmittance value of the LCD pixel. The advantage of local dimming is that it reduces power consumption.
