Abstract

A variable-gain low-noise amplifier (VG-LNA) accepts a single-ended input signal at an input port and provides a differential output signal at an output port. The VG-LNA includes amplifier stages that are commonly coupled to the input port, with subtrahend amplifier stages commonly coupled to a negative terminal of the output port and minuend amplifier stages commonly coupled to a positive terminal of the output port. A control circuit activates up to one of the subtrahend amplifier stages and one of the minuend amplifier stages as a differential set of amplifier stages that generates the differential output signal from the single-ended input signal.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to low noise amplifiers in radio frequency communication devices. Background technique [0002] In an RF receiver, the LNA is often the first loop in the overall signal processing procedure. The information bearing signal arriving at the input of the low noise amplifier is usually weak and corrupted by noise. A good LNA should boost the energy of the input signal and minimize the negative effects of the amplifier on the amplified signal, such as noise and distortion due to the amplifier. Therefore, in addition to properties such as linear gain, stability, and impedance matching in the operating frequency band, a good LNA should also have a low noise figure (NF), and high intermodulation and compression points. [0003] The front end of the receive chain is usually connected to an unbalanced grounded signal transmission line, causing interface problems with RF receivers using differential signaling architectures. In a di...
