The system comprises outer net equipment and a main-standby virtual gateway connected with the outer net equipment, the main-standby virtual gateway comprises a main interchanger and multiple standby interchangers, the main interchanger and the multiple standby interchangers are all connected with an SDN controller, and the main interchanger is connected with multiple hosts. The method comprises the steps that the SDN controller starts the virtual main-standby gateway function; the SDN controller involves the interchanges into the virtual gateway and sets the priorities of the interchanges in the virtual gateway; the main interchanger is selected to be used; the main interchanger forwards a message; whether the main interchanger works normally or not is judged, if yes, message forwarding is continued, and if not, the main interchanger is reselected. By means of the main-standby virtual gateway system and method, reliability is improved, and meanwhile host configuration is simplified. With the help of the virtual gateway, a high-reliability default link can be still provided in case a certain interchanger breaks down, and the problem of network interruption occurring after a single link breaks down is effectively avoided.
