Embodiment Construction

[0027] refer to figure 1 , the pneumatic fastener driver is operable to drive fasteners (eg, nails, pins, staples, etc.) held in the magazine 20 into the workpiece. The pneumatic fastener driver generally includes a body 26 , a handle portion 22 , a motor portion 24 , and a magazine 20 removably mounted to the body 26 . Note that when mounted to the pneumatic fastener driver, magazine 20 is aligned with body 26, forming an oblique angle, as shown in the figures. In other words, magazine 20 is not perpendicular to body 26 . This arrangement helps reduce the overall size of the pneumatic fastener driver.

[0028] Handle portion 22 serves as a gripping portion for a user to control the pneumatic fastener driver during operation. A motor housing 24 formed substantially parallel to the handle portion 22 and at the front end of the body 26 may also serve as a gripping portion for the user. For example, a user may use both hands to simultaneously grasp handle portion 26 and motor...

Abstract

A pneumatic fastener driver, contains a cylinder (46), a piston (40), a motor (32), a rack (38), and a magnetic latch. The piston (40) is positioned within the cylinde r(46) and moveable between a top-dead-center position and a bottom-dead-center position. The rack (38) is coupled to the piston and operable to drive the piston to move within the cylinder. The rack is driven by the motor via a pinion (36). The magnetic latch emits a magnetic field that magnetically attracts the piston and is capable of holding the piston in the top-dead-center position with a magnetic force, wherein the magnetic latch is adjustable to vary the magnetic force acting on the piston for driving fasteners into a workpiece at different depths. By using the magnetic latch and the length-configurable latch in the pneumatic fastener driver, it enables a convenient method of adjusting the driving depth of the fastener which is driven by the fastener driver. Also, use of the rack and pinion assembly results in reduction of the overall size of the pneumatic fastener driver.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a pneumatic fastener driver. Background technique [0002] Various fastener drivers are known in the art for driving fasteners (eg, nails, pins, staples, etc.) into a workpiece. These fastener drivers operate using various means known in the art (eg, compressed air from an air compressor, electrical power, flywheel mechanisms), but these designs typically have power, size and cost limitations. Contents of the invention [0003] Therefore, according to one aspect of the present invention, there is provided a pneumatic fastener driver comprising an air cylinder, a piston, a motor, a rack, and a magnetic latch. The piston is located within the cylinder and is movable between a top dead center position and a bottom dead center position. The rack is connected to the piston and is operable to drive the piston to move within the cylinder. The rack is driven by the motor via a pinion. The magnetic latch emits a magnetic f...
