Embodiment

[0039] Comparative samples were prepared according to the method described above, but using a sheet of material with a single barrier layer sandwiched between 2 polymer layers. For example figure 1 A sheet of material 100 is shown having a single barrier layer 104 sandwiched between two polymer layers 102 with adhesive layers 106 . Sheets of single barrier material are crimped into tubes and sealed using lap seals (e.g. Figure 4 shown), heated and blow molded to form the container. A cross-sectional photograph of the lap seal area of one of these samples is shown in Figure 5 middle. Such as Figure 5 It can be seen that the barrier of the comparative sample is not continuous in the sealing area. Also, there are large polymer layer gaps between the barrier layers at the overlapping portions. This non-continuous barrier layer results in a loss of overall barrier performance. Such a loss of performance may, for example, allow oxygen to permeate through the container, r...

Abstract

The present invention provides a method of making a container comprising: providing a sheet of material (200) having at least 2 barrier layers (204) and at least 2 polymer layers (202); forming said sheet of material into a tube (312 ); sealing said tube at the sealing area; and blow molding said tube at the sealing area, thereby forming a container in which at least 2 barrier layers form a substantially continuous barrier at the sealing area.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the manufacture of containers, and more particularly, the present disclosure relates to methods for making multi-barrier blow molded containers. Background technique [0002] Bottles and other containers can be manufactured by a variety of processes, such as thermoforming, rotational molding, blow molding or extrusion blow molding. Various containers can be produced from single or multi-layer materials. A barrier layer may be included in the multilayer material to extend the shelf life of a food or beverage product to be packaged in a container made from the multilayer material. Barrier layers can be used, for example, where the product to be packaged is sensitive to certain gases, or loses volatiles, flavors or aromas. [0003] However, a loss of overall barrier performance typically occurs where gaps between the barrier layers exist in the welded or sealed areas of the container. Therefore, there is a ne...
