Embodiment

[0110] Population aging has become a major demographic trend worldwide due to improvements in health status and longevity. This global phenomenon of aging will have major implications for health care systems worldwide due to increased morbidity and increased need for inpatient care / institutional admissions. As life expectancy increases around the world, people are increasingly aware of the importance of "healthy aging" and "quality of life". Indeed, the manifestations of aging are characterized by an increasingly chronic low-grade inflammatory state expressed as inflammatory senescence [1,2], and this state is believed to be the etiological cause of frailty and degenerative diseases. Aging is a very complex process because several biochemical processes occur in the human organism throughout life, affecting all levels from organ to cell and leading to changes in many biochemical functions. However, this process has not been fully elucidated. A large body of data indicates tha...

Abstract

In one aspect, the invention provides a method for predicting a subject's risk of unhealthy aging, said method comprising: (a) determining two or more lipids in a sample from said subject Levels of biomarkers, wherein the biomarkers are selected from two or more of the following group: (i) triacylglycerol (TAG), from TAG (46:5) to TAG (54:3); (ii) ether phosphatidylcholine (PC‑O), from PC‑O (28:0) to PC‑O (38:6); (iii) sphingomyelin (SM), from SM (33:1) to SM (50:1); (iv) phosphatidylcholine (PC), from PC (32:1) to PC (40:5); (v) phosphatidylinositol (PI), from PI (36:1 ) to PI (38:3); (vi) phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), from PE (36:2) to PE (38:4); and (b) the level of the biomarker in the sample compared to a reference value; wherein the level of the biomarker in the sample, compared to the reference value, is indicative of the subject's risk of unhealthy aging.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a healthy lifestyle and methods of preventing age-related chronic diseases. In particular, the present invention relates to biomarkers and their use in monitoring the aging process. Accordingly, the present invention provides a plurality of lipid biomarkers and biomarker combinations that can be used to predict a subject's risk of unhealthy aging. Background technique [0002] Aging is defined as a progressive decrease in functional capacity and resilience over time that is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, the aging phenotype in humans is highly heterogeneous and can be described as a complex resulting from the interaction of multiple environmental, stochastic, and epigenetic variables. Decades of research into aging have uncovered hundreds of genes and many biological processes associated with the aging process, but at the same time, many fundamental questions remain u...
