Embodiment Construction

[0018] While those skilled in the art will recognize that the teachings provided herein can be used to determine alignment errors in other non-vehicle resonant magnetic induction wireless power transfer systems, figure 2 and image 3 Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are described for use in electric vehicle charging. Such implementations are intended to be within the scope of the present disclosure.

[0019] Many methods have been proposed to achieve coil alignment using: acoustic techniques; microwave and radio frequency techniques; composite acoustic radio frequency differential propagation velocity systems; ultra-wideband systems; infrared, optical and video systems; video pattern recognition controlled robotic arms ; Differential GPS systems and mechanical alignment aids such as vehicle tire guides and bumper travel stoppers. Each method has limitations, including cost, complexity, susceptibility to contamination, icing, moisture, lack of adequate accuracy...

Abstract

A method for detecting misalignment of induction coils in a resonant inductive wireless power device comprising an array of eddy current coils superimposed on a primary induction coil, switching means for each eddy current coil, a voltage connected to a secondary induction coil detectors (such as low power rectifiers), analog-to-digital converters, primary side microcontrollers and secondary side microcontrollers, and in a vehicle charging embodiment a vehicle operator interface. During coil alignment, the primary side induction coil operates at low power. Eddy currents flow in the eddy current coils only when the associated switching device is switched on.

Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS [0002] This application claims the benefit of US Provisional Application No. 61 / 862,572, filed August 6, 2013, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. technical field [0003] This patent application relates to the transfer of electrical energy through resonant magnetic induction. More specifically, this patent application describes a method and apparatus for detecting axial misalignment of a resonant inductive wireless power transfer coil and providing an indication of the magnitude and direction of the alignment error so that alignment can be achieved. Errors are minimized or eliminated, ensuring efficient wireless power transfer. Background technique [0004] Inductive power transfer has many important applications across multiple industries and markets. figure 1 A conceptual representation of a conventional resonant inductive power transfer system is shown. exist figure 1 In it, the...
