Problems solved by technology

Different devices will have different capabilities, therefore, in order to maintain consistency on the community Wi-Fi network, there will be inconsistencies in the services provided by the various APs forming the community Wi-Fi network, or the system policy will be based on the lowest common level of function to operate the AP, which would result in resources not being used

no. 1 approach

[0033] figure 1 An overview of the network architecture of the system 1 according to the first embodiment is shown. An access point 3 located at the customer's premises provides connectivity for local devices. In this embodiment, the access point has a wireless interface and a wired Ethernet interface conforming to protocols such as 802.11n and 802.11ac.

[0034] Specifically, the wireless interface is set up to create a private-side wireless network 5 with a private-side SSID name for private-side authorized devices 7 . The private-side authorized device 7 is usually a customer's home device. The wireless interface also creates a public-side wireless network 9 (shown by a dotted line). This public-side wireless network 9 is for other devices 11 of other customers belonging to the community Wi-Fi network. For example, the device 11a connected to the public-side wireless network 9 of the access point 3a belongs to the owner of the access point 3b.

[0035] Furthermore, a w...

Embodiment approach 1a

[0114] Implementation 1a: (controller actively involved)

[0115] 1. In this embodiment, a new function "private side tracker" is written by the system management for the frame processing manager 33, which can generate new filter criteria for the AP 3 based on the frames received from the AP 3.

[0116] 2. Add a "private side tracker" function to the frame processing manager 33.

[0117] 3. AP 3 is also provided with an initial set of new filter criteria.

[0118] Initial Filter Guidelines for AP3

[0119]

[0120] Table 7

[0121] 4. When the new filter associated with the private side tracker function has been loaded, then the AP 3 is ready to apply the function. Wi-Fi client 7 first tries to connect to the public network side of AP 3 . The Wi-Fi client 7 first sends a detection request to the public network SSID 9 . The frame matcher 51 determines that none of the filter criteria match, so the AP 3 responds with a probe response, and the client 7 is then successfull...

Embodiment approach 1b

[0137] Implementation 1b: (the controller does not actively involve)

[0138] An alternative embodiment is very similar to embodiment 1a, except that higher-level filter manipulation functions are used. In particular, possible filter actions include the ability to modify filter criteria / actions (essentially self-modifying code). This allows all functionality of this particular example service to be implemented directly on the AP without involvement of the frame processing manager 33 (or possibly only deployment of initial filters).

[0139]

[0140]

[0141] Table 9

[0142] The above process allows the AP 3 to be upgraded with new behaviors and functions based on the filtering and behavior rules provided by the frame processing manager 33 .

[0143] Example Operation 3: The new service is Wi-Fi Alliance "Passpoint" (also known as Hotspot 2.0)

[0144] In this example, a new service that is not currently supported by the access point 3 is identified. For this example...

Abstract

A data network, a network controller and a method of managing routing devices. In a network of routing-capable data devices, a controller within the network core is arranged to monitor the status and capabilities of each data device and check for the availability of network functions to modify the capabilities of the data devices. The controller changes the configuration of the data device to obtain new functionality, or alters the routing behavior so that certain control data packets are forwarded to a function processor that performs processing on behalf of the data device in a proxy manner. The function processor provides virtual functions to the data device.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to broadband connections and in particular to methods of managing network nodes in a data network. Background technique [0002] In modern times, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) have been established to provide broadband services and network infrastructure to allow customers to connect to Wide Area Networks (WANs) such as the Internet. [0003] Typically, an ISP network can be divided into core network services, customer-facing interfaces, and gateways to external WANs. The ISP's network is set up so that the gateway link can be shared among all customers, rather than each customer having a dedicated link. [0004] Because the customer needs to be physically connected to the ISP's core network for the data connection, the customer-facing interface includes any routing equipment within the customer's premises, any electrical / optical line connections to the core network (usually based on Digital Subscriber Line (xDSL) ) ...
