example 1

[0182] Example 1 is a method comprising: determining a path taken by a message through a network, where the message is adapted to carry an array of message bits; assigning bit positions within the array of message bits corresponding to network links within the path; and assigning the network link The correspondence between a way and its assigned bit position is transmitted along the path to a network node connected to the network link.

example 2

[0183] Example 2 includes the method of Example 1, further comprising storing a correspondence between network links and their assigned bit positions in a data structure accessible by the network controller.

example 3

[0184] Example 3 includes the method of Example 1, further comprising generating a message bit array, wherein bit values at bit positions in the message bit array indicate whether respective network links assigned to those bit positions are included in the links to be taken by the message.

Abstract

The invention relates to a traffic engineering for bit indexed explicit replication. Methods and network devices are disclosed for traffic-engineered forwarding through a new form of bit indexed explicit replication. In one embodiment, a method includes receiving at a first node in a network a message comprising a message bit array, and comparing bit values at one or more bit positions in the message bit array to one or more entries in a forwarding table stored at the first node. The one or more bit positions correspond in this embodiment to links in the network. This embodiment of the method further includes forwarding the message over a link represented in the forwarding table if a result of the comparing indicates that the link is included in a path to be taken by the message. In a further embodiment of the method, the message is a multicast message and forwarding the message comprises forwarding a replica of the multicast message.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 121,291, filed February 26, 2015, entitled "Traffic Engineering for Bit Indexed Explicit Replication," under 35 U.S.C. Chapter 119(e), which The entire content of is hereby incorporated by reference and for all purposes as if fully and fully set forth herein. technical field [0003] The present invention relates to the field of communication. Background technique [0004] Network nodes forward data. A network node may take the form of one or more routers, one or more bridges, one or more switches, one or more servers, or any other suitable communication processing device. Data is usually formatted as messages and forwarded using forwarding tables. A message is a formatted unit of data that typically contains control information and payload data. Control information may include information identifying the source and destination, eg, addresses, error dete...
