Abstract

In one aspect is disclosed a cleansing composition comprising: (i) a surfactant; (ii) an oligodynamic metal or ions thereof; (iii) a chelating agent; and, a polymer having a group comprising a site having one or more lone pair of electrons wherein, said surfactant is soap. The polymer having a group comprising a site having one or more lone pair of electrons enhances the antimicrobial efficacy of the oligodynamic metal.

Description

[0001] field of invention [0002] The present invention relates to the field of antimicrobial compositions containing fretting metals, especially silver. In particular it relates to antimicrobial soap bars. [0003] Background of the invention [0004] The global demand for antimicrobial cleaning compositions is on the rise. Antimicrobial soap bars and cleansers for hands and body are increasingly popular with consumers. [0005] Antimicrobial cleaning compositions containing fretting metals such as silver, copper or zinc are very effective against many types of bacteria. The most widely used is silver. But some metals, notably silver, are particularly prone to becoming unstable when exposed to high pH, heat and intense sunlight, which can lead to blackening or agglomeration or, in extreme conditions, even phase separation. [0006] Such metals are typically contained at ppm or ppb (parts per million / parts per billion) levels, making it imperative to maintain their activ...
