Samples from patients will be diluted according to the protocol of the testing program, usually in a serial fashion. Using a fluidic device such as microfluidics or automated pipetting, the sample can be mixed with a dilution buffer solution to form a first dilution (eg, 1:10) of one part sample and nine parts buffer liquid. The same or alternative dilutions can be made to the dilutions of a given dilution step. In the attached figures, we have illustrated a simple dilution system, but point-of-care devices can make virtually arbitrary dilution pools by taking an appropriate amount of sample combined with a specific amount of buffer. The attached figure is only a representation of one such dilution profile.
