Problems solved by technology

Certain grades of ductile iron and specific casting configurations can adversely affect the utility of feed properties through the neck of certain metal feed elements
Additionally, certain molded lines or casting configurations can cause overcompression (collapse of the feed element or shrinkage of the feed system), causing the base of the sleeve to approach the casting surface separated only by a thin layer of sand

[0093] figure 1 A feed system 10 including a feed sleeve 12 mounted on a tubular body 14 is shown. The feed sleeve 12 is made of a heat generating material (but insulating material could also be used) and the tubular body 14 is pressed from sheet steel. The tubular body 14 has a circular cross-section and includes four integral wings 16 supporting the feed sleeve 12 and releasably attached by an adhesive.

A longitudinal axis Z passes through the feed sleeve 12 and the tubular body 14 . Referring to Figure 2A, the continuous side wall 18 extends around the axis Z and encloses a cavity for containing liquid metal during casting. The tubular body 14 defines a bore along axis Z forming a passage for liquid metal to travel from the feed sleeve cavity to the casting.

Abstract

The invention relates to a feed system for metal castings. The feed system includes a feed sleeve mounted on the tubular body. The feed sleeve has a longitudinal axis and includes a continuous side wall defining a cavity for containing liquid metal during casting. The sidewall extends generally about the longitudinal axis and has a base adjacent the tubular body. The tubular body defines an aperture therethrough to connect the cavity to the casting. A groove extends from the base into the sidewall to a first depth, and the tubular body protrudes into the groove to a second depth and is held in place by the retaining means. The second depth is less than the first depth so that, in use, when a force is applied, the retaining means is overcome and the tubular body is pushed further into the groove.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to a feed system for a metal casting operation using a casting mould, a feed sleeve for use in the feed system and a process for preparing a mold comprising the feed system. Background technique [0002] In a typical casting process, molten metal is injected into a preformed mold cavity that defines the shape of the casting. However, as the metal solidifies, the metal shrinks, causing shrinkage cavities, which in turn lead to unacceptable defects in the final casting. In the foundry industry this is a known problem and is addressed by using feed sleeves or standpipes, either during mold formation by applying feed sleeves or standpipes to the pattern plate, or afterwards by applying the sleeve Inserted into a cavity in the mold being formed, the feed sleeve or standpipe is integrally formed into the mould. Each feed sleeve provides an additional (usually enclosed) volume or cavity in communication with the mold cavity so ...
