Embodiment Construction

[0037] The following disclosure describes knitted fabrics, and more particularly, metal alloy knitted fabrics for high temperature applications, components formed therefrom (eg, heat seal members), and methods of construction thereof. Certain details are described below and Figure 1-14 are set forth in order to provide a thorough understanding of various embodiments of the present disclosure. Additional details describing well-known structures and systems generally associated with and forming knitted fabric types and constructions are not set forth in the following disclosure to avoid unnecessarily obscuring the description of the various embodiments.

[0038] Many of the details, dimensions, angles and other features shown in the drawings are merely illustrative of particular embodiments. Accordingly, other embodiments can have other details, materials, components, dimensions, angles, and features without departing from the spirit or scope of the present disclosure. Addition...

Abstract

This application relates to metal alloy knitted fabrics for high temperature insulation. Metal alloy knitted fabrics, thermal protection members formed therefrom, and methods of construction thereof are disclosed. This unique ability to knit drapable high temperature metal alloy wire allows near net shape generation at production level speeds. In addition, ceramic insulation can also be integrated at the same time to provide enhanced thermal protection. By providing a cover that withstands higher operating temperatures than stainless steel, the metal alloy knitted fabrics described herein overcome the limitations of current welded stainless steel mesh seal covers and are resistant to abrasion and clogging, capable of being a separate seal layer or as Part of an integrated sealed construction that can accommodate tight curvature changes to achieve complex shapes without wrinkling or buckling, and can be joined, sewn or mechanically fastened during knitting without welding.

Description

technical field [0001] Embodiments described herein relate generally to knitted fabrics, and more particularly to metal alloy knitted fabrics for high temperature applications, components formed therefrom, and methods of construction thereof. Background technique [0002] In many high temperature applications, such as aircraft structures, heat seals are often used between opposing faces or components. Typically, the heat seal member provides a thermal barrier that will be subjected to specified conditions (eg, exposure to temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees Celsius for a period of time greater than 15 minutes). These opposing components are subjected to operating load vibrations and repeated opening and closing during operation and maintenance procedures. As such, these heat seal components are subject to a high degree of wear and potential for damage. [0003] Current techniques for making heat-sealed members include the use of multiple layers of materials including, f...
