A method and system of emulsion extraction and processing from an oil / water separator, comprising detecting (104) an emulsion parameter (emulsion layer level), passing (110) an emulsion stream out of the separator, combining the emulsion stream with a water stream (106) exiting the separator to create a diluted emulsion (114), dynamically adjusting a dilution of the diluted emulsion based at least in part on the emulsion parameter, and separating (108, 120) the diluted emulsion into an underflow stream (118, 124) comprising substantially water and a reject stream (116, 122) comprising substantially oil.
