Embodiment Construction

[0008] An example of an electrically controlled switching device 10 is shown in figure 1 and figure 2 middle. Generally, the electronically controlled switchgear 10 includes a support 12 , a set of detachable contacts 14 including a first contact 16 and a second contact 18 , an SMA element 20 , a sensor 22 and a controller 24 . The first contactor 16 , also referred to as a fixed contactor, is fixed relative to the support member 12 and can be connected to a conductor 28 . The second contactor 18 , also referred to as a movable contactor, is movable relative to the support 12 and is connectable to a load conductor 30 . The electronically controlled switchgear 10 is operable to place the set of contactors 14 in figure 1 An open state as shown in the figure 2 Move between an off state as shown in . The electronically controlled switch device 10 can work in at least two states: an open state, which is shown in figure 2 , wherein the first contactor 16 is in contact with ...

Abstract

An electrically controlled switching device (10) includes a support (12), a first contact (16) coupled to the support (12), a second contact (18) coupled to the support (12), an SMA element (20) operably connected with the second contact (18), a sensor (22) positioned on or adjacent to the SMA element (20), and a controller (24) in communication with the sensor (22). The SMA element (20) is configured to transform between a first shape and a different second shape responsive to an electrical pulse heating the SMA element (20) to a transformation temperature. The sensor (22) is configured to detect a detected temperature of the SMA element (20). The controller (24) is configured to control the electrical pulse heating the SMA element (20). The controller (24) receives signals from the sensor (22) indicative of the detected temperature of the SMA element (20).

Description

technical field [0001] Electrically controlled switching devices, such as relays and contactors, typically use a solenoid that is charged to open or close the switch. Improvements in speed and weight, as well as simplification of the manufacture of these electronically controlled switching devices can be enhanced. Background technique [0002] Some circuit interrupting devices, including circuit breakers, on / off switches, etc., use shape memory alloy (SMA) elements as thermal circuit breakers or as a replacement for solenoids in these devices. It can be difficult to quickly and accurately heat SMA components under varying operating temperature requirements. At a lower temperature, more energy is required to increase the temperature of the SMA element to effect a change in the shape of the SMA element, but at a higher temperature, less energy is required to avoid permanent damage to the SMA element. Contents of the invention [0003] In view of the foregoing, an electroni...
