Abstract

Methods for production of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from coccolithophorid Pleurochrysis carterae are disclosed. This invention provides methods for producing eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5 n-3), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22: 6 n-3), stearidonic acid (SDA, 18: 4 n-3), alpha-linolenic acid (ALA, 18: 3 n-3), and oleic acid (18: 1) from Pleurochrysis carterae (Haptophyta, Prymnesiophyceae). The current invention comprises (a). culture conditions for inducing the synthesis of the PUFAs in the said organism; (b). a method to enhance the synthesis of oleic acid in the said organism. ThePUFAs produced with the current invention can be used for food, dietary supplement, cosmetic and pharmaceutical applications.

Description

Background technique [0001] Coccolithophorid microalgae are a class of unicellular plankton widely found in temperate and tropical oceans. Coccolithic marine algal blooms are a common type of marine algal blooms, with an average annual area of 1.4 million square kilometers between 1978 and 1986 (Brown and Yoder, 1994), and the main algal species are Emiliania huxleyi and Gephyrocapsa oceanica (Hulburt et al., 1960). Due to their widespread distribution and unique physiological characteristics, coccolithomorphic microalgae have important impacts on marine ecosystems and the global carbon cycle. As photosynthetic organisms, coccolith microalgae can not only use carbon dioxide through photosynthesis to synthesize and accumulate proteins, lipids, and other various organic compounds, they can also use carbon dioxide to synthesize calcium carbonate crystals through calcification, thus achieving long-term carbon dioxide The purpose of storage (Brownlee and Taylor, 2004; Rost and ...
