[0029] 1 Overview

[0030] Referring to the drawings, wherein like reference numerals indicate like or similar elements throughout the figures, there is shown throughout a system 10 and method for manipulating the anatomy of a patient 12 . like figure 1 As shown, system 10 is a robotic surgical cutting system for cutting material (eg, bone or soft tissue) from the anatomy of patient 12 . exist figure 1 In , patient 12 is undergoing surgery. figure 1 The anatomy in includes the patient's femur (F) and tibia (T). Surgery can involve tissue removal. In other embodiments, the surgery involves partial or full knee or hip replacement surgery. The system 10 is designed to cut away tissue to be replaced by surgical implants, such as hip and knee implants, including unicompartmental, bilateral or total knee implants. Some of these implant types are shown in U.S. Patent Application Serial No. 13 / 530,927, entitled "Prosthetic Implants and Methods of Implantation," the disclosure of...

Abstract

A surgical system and method for manipulating an anatomy with a tool includes defining a first virtual boundary related to the anatomy and a second virtual boundary related to the anatomy. In the first mode the first virtual boundary is activated. Movement of the tool is constrained relative to a first virtual boundary in the first mode. The first virtual boundary is deactivated in the second mode. Movement of the tool is constrained relative to a second virtual boundary in the second mode.

Description

[0001] Cross References to Related Applications [0002] This application claims priority and benefit to US Provisional Patent Application No. 62 / 163,672, filed May 19, 2015, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference into this application. technical field [0003] The present invention relates generally to systems and methods for manipulating anatomy with tools of a surgical system, and more particularly to systems and methods for constraining tools using virtual boundaries. Background technique [0004] Today, operators find it helpful to use robotic devices to assist in performing surgical procedures. Robotic devices generally comprise a movable arm with a free distal end that can be positioned with high accuracy. A tool applied to the surgical site is attached to the free end of the arm. The operator is able to move the arm and thus precisely position the tool at the surgical site to perform the procedure. [0005] In robotic surgery, computer-a...
