[0106] Example 1 - Sweat Facilitated Loss of Amino Acids During Exercise in Male Athletes

[0107] The present inventors investigated whether significant amounts of amino acids are lost in sweat under defined exercise conditions and constant temperature and humidity. As described below, two independent studies were conducted under controlled exercise and environmental conditions to generate a total of 19 participants, providing sweat for the analysis. One study provided 11 subjects with corresponding post-exercise plasma samples to compare the sweat composition with amino acids. A second study provided eight additional sweat samples to determine whether subgroups of athletes could be delineated based on sweat characteristics, such as total Amino acid concentration and fluid loss / hour. The studies were approved by the Newcastle University Human Research Ethics Committee and all participants provided written informed consent before joining the study.

[0132] Example 2 - Excretion of Amino Acids in Sweat During Exercise Shows Higher Collagen Turnover in Adult Women than Men

[0133] The inventors characterized the amino acid composition of the sweat of adults from the general population to assess sex differences in sweat composition and whether patterns of sweat amino acid loss represent a significant effect on nitrogen balance. Sweat was also measured from a cohort of chronic fatigue subjects to investigate whether study subjects with chronic fatigue exhibited higher rates of amino acid excretion, resulting in a net negative nitrogen balance.

[0134] Participants were adult men and women recruited from the general population and a small group of individuals (n=7) diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome. Sweat was collected from a total of 54 human subjects, including 21 females and 33 males. Four women and three men reported chronic fatigue over 3 years. Sweat was collected from healthy cohorts using sterile sample bottl...

[0152] Example 3 - Sweat-promoted amino acid loss and amino acid supplementation in horses

[0153] The present inventors characterized the amino acid composition of horse sweat to assess the possibility of exercise-induced sweat-promoted amino acid loss and investigated the possibility of amino acid replacement by supplementation to improve horse condition during training.

[0154] The study included two cohorts of 5 to 6 purebred harness racing geldings, aged 3 to 5 years, with no history of major illness or suffering from any major illness or injury at the start of the study. The study was approved by the Newcastle University Animal Care and Ethics Committee.

[0155] first group

[0156] In the first cohort (n=5), all horses followed the same training program under the supervision of a trainer and were actively competitive throughout the study. Sampling was integrated into the horse's regular training regimen and scheduled to coincide with periods involving high-intensit...

Abstract

Provided herein are compositions comprising amino acids and uses of such compositions to aid in recovery from exercise, illness or injury, in performance during exercise, in survival in extreme climatic conditions, and to reduce fatigue. The present disclosure relates to amino acid supplements, which may serve to supplement amino acids lost in sweat.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to compositions comprising amino acids and uses of such compositions as supplements to replace amino acids lost in sweat, to aid recovery from exercise, disease or injury, performance during exercise, and in extreme weather conditions down to survive. Background technique [0002] Amino acids are essential metabolites for the biosynthesis of structural and functional proteins in the body. Depending on the specific role, various functional proteins undergo continuous turnover to provide metabolic control and adaptation to physiological demands arising from exercise, food intake, pathogenic challenge, and repair of tissue damage. Amino acids also have a wide range of important roles as "free" metabolites, some of which can act directly as inhibitory neurotransmitters (such as glycine) or as anabolic hormones (epinephrine and norepinephrine from tyrosine) and neurotransmitters (Synthesis of γ-aminobutyric acid fr...
