Problems solved by technology

While the disclosed sensor is thus capable of providing information on the magnitude and location of the applied force, the required construction is somewhat cumbersome and difficult to manufacture
Additionally, the setup of the sensor or sensor array limits the usable sensing area
Additionally, the transfer of forces exerted on the three-dimensional surface to the sensor through the interposed soft elastic material can lead to inaccuracies and inconsistencies

Embodiment Construction

[0046] figure 1 Illustrated is a conductive material, or at least partially conductive material 10, in the form of a generally planar sheet 12, for example formed from silicone rubber containing carbon filler and conductive metal particles. In one embodiment, the material is silicone rubber mixed with graphite in a weight ratio of 5:1 to 1:5. Possible replacement components are rubber and / or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) or a type of TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), which are advantageously or can be recyclable. In another embodiment, the material may be a thin layer of material (such as plastic, silicone or fabric) coated on one side with a conductive material (such as nickel or graphite). Alternatively, hard materials such as conductive metals (eg aluminum) may be used.

[0047] In either case, but more practically for "soft" material embodiments, the conductivity of the material can vary across the material. This can be achieved by varying the concentration of the condu...

Abstract

A sensor device (10) is provided for generating an electrical signal. The device comprises or consists of an electrically conductive material having, at least in part, a three-dimensionally profiled surface (16). The surface is configured to create a change in said electrical signal in response to movement of a conductive object (e.g. a person's finger) thereacross. A method of using the sensor device comprises connecting the sensor device to an electrical signal output device and moving an object across the three-dimensionally profiled surface to create a change in the electrical signal detectable by the electrical signal output device. A computer program is provided that is configured to, when executed, cause a computing device to perform the method. A system is provided that comprises the sensor device and the computer program, the sensor device being electrically connectable to the computing device (24).

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates to sensor devices and methods of their use and manufacture, and in particular to a sensor device in the form of a three-dimensional tactile interface. Background technique [0002] Tactile sensors provide a means of obtaining information through physical interaction with the sensor and are commonly used in applications such as mobile and computing devices, robotics, and control systems. These sensors can operate based on piezoresistive, piezoelectric, capacitive and elastic resistive sensing. For example, in a capacitive touch switch, one simply touches the sensor to change the capacitance within the sensor and trigger the switch. Various pressure-sensitive materials, including quantum tunneling composites, are now available for pressure switching and sensing. These are used in soft robots, heavy machines and wearable devices. Examples, including conductive inks, have been developed to integrate sensitivity into the mat...
