[0041] figure 1 is the table reproduced from 3GPP Technical Specification (TS) 36.101, v13.1.0, Table 5.6A-1. The table depicts six different CA class definitions (A-I).

[0042] CA configurations and bandwidth combination sets are also defined in TS 36.101 using different CA capabilities. E.g, figure 2 is a reproduction of Table 5.6A.1-1, which shows an in-band continuous CA configuration with supported bandwidth combinations for each CC in order of increasing carrier frequency. UL CA capabilities are also indicated in a separate column in the table. image 3 Table 5.6A.1-2 is depicted, which shows another CA capability as inter-band CA between two frequency bands.

[0043] In order to provide more flexibility to deploy different bandwidths within the same frequency band, bandwidth combination sets are also introduced in the last column in the table. Figure 4 Table 5.6A.1-2a is depicted, which shows the CA configuration for inter-band aggre...

Abstract

An inventive UE carrier aggregation (CA) capability reporting signalling model allows UEs (30) aggregating large numbers of component carriers to transmit CA-relevant capabilities to the network moreefficiently than the current (legacy) signalling model. Rather than reporting CA / MIMO / CSI / NAICS capabilities separately for each supported band combination, including fallback configurations, embodiments of the present invention either report UE Radio Frequency (RF) and Baseband (BB) related capabilities separately, or report them disassociated from CA band configurations. This approach avoids theneed to signal the full UE (30) set of capabilities for each of (possibly many) supported band combinations. Furthermore, fallback capabilities are signalled implicitly, eliminating the need to transmit this data.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention relates generally to wireless telephony, and more particularly to an efficient system and method for communicating carrier aggregation capabilities of user equipment. Background technique [0002] Carrier aggregation (CA) is a technique that increases the bandwidth and thus the bit rate of the air interface between a wireless communication network and a subscriber's user equipment (UE). In CA, two or more component carriers (CCs) are modulated with data, and a UE receives data from (or transmits data on) all specified CCs. This increases both peak user data rates and overall network capacity, and allows operators to take advantage of fragmented spectrum allocations. [0003] Release 10 of the 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard introduces a limited form of CA called Dual Cell (DC), which allows for two intra-band contiguous CCs (FDD or TDD) or two inter-band non-contiguous CCs (FDD only) polymerization. CA was extended in R...
