Embodiment Construction

[0077] A description of example implementations follows.

[0078] In general, many of the vehicle barrier embodiments disclosed herein include a base, a deployable component, an actuation mechanism, and a trigger. The deployable component includes a base end rotatably coupled to the base to allow the deployable component to transition from a stored orientation to a deployed orientation. The deployable component also includes a vehicle-engaging end configured to physically engage the vehicle to impair motion of the vehicle in the deployed orientation. These parts together with some optional parts figure 1 and Figure 2A to Figure 2C Examples are shown in the embodiments shown.

[0079] In some embodiments (for example, in conjunction with image 3 In the described apparatus), the motion of the vehicle may be attenuated by means of one or more tire studs located at the vehicle-engaging end of the deployable component. In addition to tire studs (eg, Figure 2A to Figure 2C ...

Abstract

A vehicle barrier apparatus includes a base and a deployable element. The deployable element is rotatably coupled to the base, enabling transition from a stored orientation to a deployed orientation. The deployable element can engage a vehicle physically in the deployed orientation to impair vehicle motion. An actuating mechanism is mechanically coupled to the deployable element cause the deployable element to move from the stored orientation to the deployed orientation responsive to a trigger. The apparatus may include a triggering device that detects the vehicle and provides the trigger to the actuating mechanism responsive to the detection. In addition, or alternatively, the apparatus can include a communications interface that receives a trigger communication from a remote location andcauses the trigger to be provided to the actuating mechanism. The apparatus may be portable.

Description

[0001] related application [0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Application No. 62 / 365,711 filed July 22, 2016. The entire teachings of the aforementioned applications are incorporated herein by reference. Background technique [0003] Security barriers can be installed around buildings, sidewalks, and other locations to prevent vehicular intrusion that may pose a threat. Potential threats may include vehicles such as trucks loaded with bombs, suicide bombers intent on attacking security checkpoints, and other vehicles directed at targets for terrorist purposes. Existing vehicle barriers include retractable metal spikes installed in the pavement, large concrete blocks or stones around buildings, concrete barriers alongside roads and sites that can be lifted into place by crane, and metal stakes drilled into sidewalks and streets . Contents of the invention [0004] Existing barriers are insufficient to address today's terrorist threats and othe...
