[0043] In the following description, similar elements in the drawings are identified by similar numbers, and similar elements can be distinguished by appending letters after the identification numbers as needed.

[0044] figure 1 and figure 2 is a schematic diagram of a tracking device 20 according to an embodiment of the present invention. The device 20 is generally configured for use in a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environment, and in the description below it is assumed to be used in conjunction with an MRI scanner 22 . Scanners 22 are assumed to define an orthogonal set of xyz axes, such as figure 1 As shown, where the axis of symmetry of the bore 28 of the scanner is assumed to define the horizontal z-axis of the scanner, and there is a vertical y-axis and an x-axis orthogonal to the z and y-axes. The origin of the orthogonal axes is assumed to correspond to the center of the bore 28 . However, those skilled in the art will appreciate that device 20 is not limit...

Abstract

The invention relates to a magnetic transmitters for a magnetic tracking system. Provided is an apparatus having a frame encompassing a volume. The apparatus includes three pairs of separated planar conductive coils, the separated coils of each pair having a common axis of symmetry, the three pairs being attached to the frame so that the common axes of symmetry are mutually orthogonal, and so thatthe coils surround the volume. An alternating current power supply is coupled to drive the separated coils of each pair in anti-phase so as to generate a magnetic field having a preset spatial variance over the volume. The apparatus also includes a probe that is configured to enter the volume and that has a sensor coupled to generate a signal responsive to a temporal rate of change of the magnetic field and to the preset spatial variance thereof. A processor is configured to receive the signal and in response formulates a position of the probe within the volume.

Description

technical field [0001] This invention relates generally to magnetic tracking systems, and in particular to the design of transmitters for use in such systems. Background technique [0002] If the probe has a sensor capable of measuring the radiation field, a magnetic tracking system in which a magnetic emitter radiates into a space can be used to track the probe in that space. This tracking assumes that the radiated field from the transmitter has been calibrated so that measurements of the radiated field value can be used to derive the probe's position. [0003] In many cases, calibration is compromised by metallic elements in or near the radiation space. For example, the metal of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, although it is non-magnetic, can affect the calibration of the tracking system. [0004] US Patent 5,833,608 to Acker describes a magnetic position and orientation determination system. The system uses a magnetic field comprising a uniform field from H...
