Embodiment Construction

[0017] Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in particular figure 1 , shows a schematic diagram of the electric motor 10 connected to the AC grid 12 . Although the electric motor 10 can be provided with single-phase power, but figure 1 An electric motor 10 in is shown connected to an electrical grid 12 with three-phase power 14 . As shown, each power line 14 between the grid 12 and the motor 10 is provided with a switch 16 which interrupts and connects the power between the grid 12 and the motor 10 . although figure 1 A single switch 16 is shown being used for each power line 14 , but it is understood that each switch 16 may represent a plurality of switches (eg, a switch bank) to perform the desired switching between the AC grid 12 and the motor 10 .

[0018] In a preferred embodiment, the switch 16 is a solid state switch 16 as opposed to an electromagnetic switch. Switch 16 may be referred to as a motor contactor 16 because switch 16 must be able to handle the ent...

Abstract

A method is provided for reducing inrush currents through power switches used to turn on an AC motor. The power switches may be solid state switches that connect the motor to an AC power supply to rotate the motor. The method delays closing the switches after receiving a signal to turn the motor on. The waveform of the power supply is monitored before closing the power switches that turn on the motor in order to reduce initial current fed through the solid state switches.

Description

Background technique [0001] The present invention relates generally to AC motors, and more particularly to the control of switches that turn on AC motors. [0002] AC motors are typically provided with one or more switches that connect the motor to the AC power source of the AC grid. When connected to an AC grid, an AC motor may be referred to as direct-on-line (DOL). The switches used to connect the motor to the grid are often referred to as contactors because they must be able to handle the full voltage and current load of the motor. [0003] Typically, traditional contactors are electromagnetic switches that use an electromagnetic actuator and a mechanical switch to switch power to an AC motor on and off. One advantage of electromagnetic switches is their high durability to the electrical load passing through the switch. Although electromagnetic switches generally have relatively slow reaction times, this is not always a problem with motor contactors because the timing o...
