The method is applied to the arithmetic device, the arithmetic device comprises at least one arithmetic module, each arithmetic module comprises (M * N) arithmetic units, the (M * N) arithmetic units in each arithmetic module are arranged into a two-dimensional matrix array with M rows and N columns, and M and N are integers larger than or equal to 2 respectively. The matrix operation method comprises the steps of obtaining an address of a sub-matrix according to an address of a to-be-operated matrix carried in a matrix operation instruction, wherein the sub-matrix is a two-dimensional matrix of M rows and N columns obtained by segmenting the to-be-operated matrix; reading matrix elements of the sub-matrixes into the operation modules according to the addresses of the sub-matrixes, wherein one operation module corresponds to one sub-matrix; and controlling an operation module to perform matrix operation on the sub-matrixes according to the matrix operation instruction to obtain a matrix operation result.
