Embodiment Construction

[0060] The purpose of the disclosed designs is to create an expandable port for a clot retrieval catheter capable of providing local flow restriction / restriction with a large distally facing port that The portion is tailored to provide sufficient radial force and high flexibility to be able to navigate within the external catheter through tortuous regions of the vasculature to the occlusive clot. Large mouth design provides significantly greater suction efficiency and flow restriction capabilities. Such advantages may also be particularly beneficial in the context of stroke interventional procedures, where the vessels in the neurovascular bed are particularly small, tortuous, and fragile. Thus, tailored axial and flexural stiffness distributions of the expandable mouth tip can inhibit kinking and binding while tracking through these vessels. The tip can have a collapsed state so that the clot retrieval catheter is compatible with relatively low profile access sheaths and exte...

Abstract

The invention relates to a catheter mouth design. An expandable mouth for a catheter is disclosed, that is capable of locally restricting flow and providing a large mouth opening that provides sufficient radial force while having flexibility to reach and retrieve occluded clots. The expandable mouth may have a frame having a collapsed state, so that the clot retrieval catheter may be a compatible thin outer catheter and has an expanded state for contacting the vessel wall and sealing or limiting proximal flow. The frame may have one or more support arms and a distal support cuff, which may have narrowed sections, undulations, closed pores, and other flexibility enhancing features. Alternatively, the frame may be a grid having an array of closed pores. The expandable mouth may be characterized by a membrane cover disposed around the support frame. These improvements can safely and quickly access complex areas and more reliably remove occlusions while shortening surgical time.

Description

technical field [0001] The present disclosure generally relates to devices and methods for removing acute blockages from blood vessels during endovascular medical treatment. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to expandable tips for retrieval of aspiration catheters. Background technique [0002] Use of aspiration and clot retrieval in mechanical thrombectomy for endovascular interventions in patients with conditions such as acute ischemic stroke (AIS), myocardial infarction (MI) and pulmonary embolism (PE) Catheters and devices. Access to the neurovascular bed is particularly challenging using conventional techniques because the target vessel is small in diameter, distal to the insertion site, and highly tortuous. [0003] Conventional catheters must try and balance many factors when delivering effective devices to the small and highly branched cerebral arterial system. Catheters must be flexible enough to navigate the vasculature and withstand high flexura...
