Embodiment Construction

[0028] figure 1 An example of a wind turbine 1 is shown in a schematic perspective view. A wind turbine 1 comprises a tower 2 , a nacelle 3 at the top of the tower, and a rotor 4 operatively coupled to a generator contained inside the nacelle 3 . In addition to the generator, the nacelle contains the various components required for converting wind energy into electrical energy, as well as for operating, controlling and optimizing the performance of the wind turbine 1 . The rotor 4 includes a central hub 5 and a plurality of blades 6 protruding outward from the central hub 5 . In the embodiment shown, the rotor 4 comprises three blades 6, but the number may vary, eg the rotor may have two or four blades. Additionally, the wind turbine includes a control system. The control system may be placed inside the nacelle or distributed at multiple locations inside the turbine and communicatively linked.

Abstract

The invention provides a method of shutting down a wind turbine, the wind turbine comprising: a rotor having a plurality of blades; and a generator system coupled to the rotor. The method comprises: operating the generator system to generate electrical power 5 and applying a load torque to the rotor; using the power reference signal to control the generated electric power; determining that the wind turbine needs to be shut down; in response to determining that the wind turbine needs to be shut down, varying the power reference signal to increase the generated electrical power, thereby slowing down the rotor; determining that the rate of the rotor has decreased by 10 to below a threshold; and in response to determining that the rate of the rotor has dropped below the threshold, changing the pitch of the blades to further slow down the rotor.

Description

technical field [0001] The present invention generally relates to a method of shutting down a wind turbine. Background technique [0002] Traditionally, in an emergency event, such as a high yaw error, the wind turbine is shut down by pitching out the wind turbine blades upwind to immediately slow the rotor. [0003] This approach can lead to large asymmetric loads on the blades. [0004] Accordingly, there is a need for methods of shutting down wind turbines that avoid or mitigate such loads. Contents of the invention [0005] A first aspect of the invention provides a method of shutting down a wind turbine comprising: a rotor having a plurality of blades; and a generator system coupled to the rotor, the method comprising: operating the generator system to generate electrical power and supplying The rotor applies a load torque; using the power reference signal, controlling the generated electrical power; determining that the wind turbine needs to be shut down; in respon...
