Problems solved by technology

[0005] Recently, despite pre-treatment validation, errors in the delivery of radiation therapy have resulted in injury to patients, some with fatal consequences
In particular, because this verification occurs without the patient in place, it cannot account for changes in the setup, such as system errors or misalignments that could inadvertently expose the patient to harmful radiation during treatment

Embodiment Construction

[0024] An electronic portal imaging device (EPID) can be used to verify proper treatment of a patient by measuring radiation (eg, output images) passing through the patient and thus incident on the EPID. A cine stream of output image frames acquired during patient treatment may be processed and used to verify in real-time or near real-time (eg, less than 1 second) that the dose delivered was not harmful to the patient. As used herein, a cine stream means the continuous stream of image frames acquired by the EPID during the continuous acquisition mode of operation.

[0025] For example, EPID can run at a specific frame rate (such as, but not limited to, 15 frames per second), which rate is a configurable setting to optimize imaging capabilities subject to EPID or other hardware limitations, among other things. Image frames acquired during a predetermined period for dose checking may be combined (eg, by summing) to form a single output image, which may represent the dose arrivin...

Abstract

The present disclosure relates to systems, methods, and apparatus for real-time therapy verification employing an electronic portable imaging device. A dose of radiation received by a patient from a radiotherapy system may be validated by acquiring a movie stream of image frames from an electron radiation imaging device (EPID) arranged to detect radiation exiting the patient during irradiation. A movie stream of EPID image frames may be processed in real-time to form an output image (e.g., as an absolute dose relative to a water dose value) that provides dose measurements at the EPID, which may represent characteristics of radiation received by the patient. By periodically comparing dose measurements to predetermined features, consistency during treatment to predetermined features for the field may be determined, which may include a predicted total dose and / or a complete irradiation area profile (CIAO) in the field after complete treatment. When a non-match is detected, the system operator may be warned or the illumination is automatically stopped.

Description

[0001] This application is a divisional application of a Chinese patent application with the application number 201510065212.2 and the application date of February 6, 2015, entitled "System, method and device for real-time treatment verification using electronic portal imaging device". technical field [0002] The present disclosure relates generally to the delivery of radiation to a patient, and more particularly to systems, methods, and apparatus for real-time dose verification of radiation therapy treatments using electronic portal imaging devices (EPIDs). Background technique [0003] Dynamic radiation therapy techniques, such as intensity-modulated radiation therapy (MRT) and volume-modulated arc therapy (VMT), are typically used with radiation therapy systems, such as linear accelerators (linacs), equipped with multi-leaf collimators (MLC) to treat pathological anatomy by delivering specified doses of radiation (X-rays, gamma rays, electrons, protons, and / or ions) to th...
